One of the places we’ve taken our kids to is the Rehabilitation Zoo. All the animals here are being cared for by the locals and the best part, the visitors get the opportunity for more up close and personal encounters with the animals. The kids fed peanuts to monkeys, porcupine, and deer, bananas to elephants, and had the opportunity to pet or touch the otters, ostrich, monkeys, and deer, and watch a baby elephant learn how to walk. We discovered moon bears, clouded leopard, and new species of birds. We had our first experience of using a squatting toilet and got to enjoy drinking coconut juice from coconuts that are bigger than our heads. My favorite moments are when the deer was rubbing her head on Phil’s back as she begged for more peanuts, then proceeded to follow after him when we moved on. Only moments later, a monkey came up from behind Phil and snatched the bag to peanuts right out of his hand. It was the most fun zoo experience we’ve ever had.

On our way back home, our remork driver introduced us to an authentic Khmer restaurant, where Claire had her first experience of breaking into lobster, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

A very windy, noisy, and stinky (from all the exhaust fumes) remork ride home.

Have we already sacrificed our freedom in exchange for safety, all in the name of progress?
