Ten months into our full-time travel adventure, I have to admit it doesn’t look exactly the way I pictured. I thought I might have tried (and maybe failed) at a business idea or two, that the kids would be pitching in with trip planning, and that the freedom in their education would have them fully self-motivated.
So what’s it actually like? Instead of one long post, we’ll share a new topic daily.
While you anxiously anticipate tomorrow’s post on Making Ends Meet, here are a few quick takes:
- Homesickness? Not often. The kids miss friends—enough for a few tearful moments—and we all miss family gatherings, but it’s infrequent. I also don’t miss the work of home ownership, or even the USA (perhaps because we’re in sort of a honeymoon phase everywhere we go).
- Do we get sick of each other? Not really. We genuinely enjoy being together, though small spaces can make personal space tricky. Maybe the kids tire of us more than we do of them—you’d have to ask them.
- Language barrier? Rarely. English is common, making it harder to practice another language. When we do need help, Google Translate slows us down but gets the job done. That isn’t to say it’s 100%—like the time I asked for air in my tires and got shiny, polished tires instead. Every conversation is a little harder, taking a little more patience and understanding on both sides, but it has never been a barrier.
